Defining Moment: Sir Steve Redgrave

Three years ago, Sir Steve Redgrave was recognized as one of Britain’s greatest Olympian when he was awarded the prestigious BBC Personality of the Year Life Time Achievement Award. It is another achievement to add to Sir Steve Redgrave’s collection and at Playfinder, we take a look back at one of Britain’s greatest athlete.

Sir Steve Redgrave started his Rowing career in 1984

In a career that would span 16 years, Sir Steve Redgrave competed and represented Great Britain at five Olympic Games, amassing an incredible five gold gold medals and one bronze medal.

In doing so, he became the first British athlete to have won five gold medals at the Olympic games and his achievements was surpassed only as recently as 2012 at the London Olympic games by Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Bradley Wiggins.

Sir Steve’s Redgrave’s Rowing achievements continued beyond the Olympic Games. He represented England at the Commonwealth Games where he won three further Commonwealth gold medals and 9 World Rowing Championship golds.

Sir Steve Redgrave astounding achievement is not only widely recognized as one the greatest British Olympian of all time but also most the successful male rower Olympian in history. He remains to this day, the only Olympian to have secured five gold medals from five different Olympics.

Following his retirement in 2000, Sir Steve continued his remarkable collection of personal accolades. He was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2000. In 2001, it was announced in New Year’s Honours list that Sir Steve Redgrave would be made a Knight Bachelor for “service to rowing” and he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. Further, he was voted 36th in a BBC poll of the 100 greatest Britons.

Three years ago, Sir Steve Redgrave’s was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is given to a sportsperson “who has made a major impact on the world of sport during their lifetime”. With 6 Olympic medals to his name amongst others, Sir Steve Redgrave certainly fits that bill.
