Top 10 Premier League Derby Games

The Premier League has given us some cracking derbies over the years. Ahead of this weekend’s Merseyside derby, we’ve picked out our top 10 Premier League derby games from the past 10 seasons.

Top 10 Premier League Derby Games

  1. Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City (2011)

Memorable for Rooney’s spectacular bicycle kick, this game is cemented in Manchester derby history. His game winning strike 12 minutes from time ensured victory and Manchester United went on to win the title.

  1. West Ham 3-4 Tottenham (2007)

It ended in defeat for relegation threatened West Ham after a 95th minute goal from Stalteri, but Carlos Tevez lit up this London derby. He put in a Man of the Match performance that saw the Argentinian jump into the crowd after scoring and going on to save the Hammers from the drop.

  1. Newcastle 5-1 Sunderland (2010)

One to forget for the Black Cats against Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear derby in which Kevin Nolan netted a hat-trick.

  1. Everton 3-3 Liverpool (2013)

Everton haven’t had much luck in recent Merseyside derbies and this is no exception. Lukaku looked to have won it for the Toffees before they conceded an 89th minute equaliser from Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge.

  1. Tottenham 4-4 Chelsea (2008)

Chelsea led three times in this classic Premier League derby at White Hart Lane, but Spurs managed to salvage a point with Robbie Keane’s 88th minute strike.

  1. Manchester United 1-6 Manchester City (2011)

This was a demolition derby at Old Trafford as Manchester City inflicted United’s worst home defeat in 56 years. Balotelli went on to score a hat-trick but his celebration after his first goal stole headlines. Why always him?

  1. Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal (2014)

Another demolition, this time at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea rattled 6 past Arsenal. Probably most remembered for Gibbs’ bizarre sending off after Oxlade-Chamberlain handled the ball in the box. Whoops.

  1. Chelsea 3-5 Arsenal (2011)

Chelsea led twice, but it ended in embarrassment for the Blues as an in-form Van Persie sticking in 3, his second coming after a slip from John Terry left him with a one on one against Cech.

  1. Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham (2008)

The Gunners led 3-1 and 4-2 in this classic North London derby which burst into life with David Bentley’s 40 yard opener. Arsenal responded and took the lead but it wasn’t to be with Aaron Lennon’s dramatic equaliser for Spurs in the 90th minute when the ball came to him off the post.

  1. Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City (2009)

Widely regarded as the best Manchester derby of all time, tensions were high as Tevez returned to Old Trafford after a controversial move to City in the summer. Bellamy looked to have rescued a point for City, but Michael Owen grabbed a late winner in the 96th minute. What. A. Game.
