Wandsworth borough is located in south west London where there is lots of green space making it ideal for a whole host of sports. Furzedown Recreation Centre has 3G astroturf pitches and sand-based astroturf pitches for hire. The 3G five-a-side surface costs £53.50 per hour during peak times and then £28.50 per hour in off-peak. It costs £60 per hour for the 3G pitch in peak and then £33.50 in off-peak. The macadam court surface is used for tennis and netball bookings. There is an indoor sports hall that can be hired for basketball and badminton. Other sports venues that be booked here include an athletics track and cricket nets. Visitors are able to park for free and there are changing rooms onsite. The venue opens between 10am and 9.30pm on weekdays and then 10am to 5pm over the weekend.
Tooting Leisure Centre has a wide range of sporting activities that can be booked online. The sports venue has an indoor five-a-side football pitch housed in a smart sports hall. There are badminton courts and cricket nets within the sports hall too. Tooting Leisure Centre has some fine squash courts onsite as well as a state-of-the-art gym for fitness enthusiasts. Visitors to the sports venue can also swim and those arriving by car can take advantage of the free parking here. Those coming by public transport should travel to Tooting Broadway on the Northern line. Sports fans can get ready at the venue in the changing rooms.
Wandsworth Council is committed to helping locals get active and keep healthy. The council works with a number of sports facilities that range from swimming pools to tennis courts. Local residents can visit the council site to gather information on various venues across the area. There is a top initiative called Free Access for National Sports people (FANS scheme). Another very popular activity campaign is the London Youth Games, Europe’s largest youth sports competition. It is a group of events taking place over 9 months that features school and community competitions for over 30 different sports.
The Enable Sports Development team provide a wide range of support for sports clubs, community groups, coaches and talented athletes. Sports clubs can get support, development and funding advice for new programmes. An annual coach education programme helps to support the coaches own development through professional courses and funding support while young up and coming athletes are supported through the FANS scheme as well as Active Wandsworth’s grant programme.
